Werner is a physicist ("Diplom-Physiker", TU Darmstadt) and chemist (M.Sc. & PhD, U of Toronto). Until his official retirement in 2011, he was Group Leader (and the last ten years Assistant to the Managing Director) at a German Max Planck research institute. (The Max Planck Society is Germany's foremost research organisation, the currently 82 Max Planck Institutes conduct outstanding basic research in the natural sciences, life sciences, social sciences, and the humanities).
As a scientist, Werner had independent research cooperations with groups in, for example, Russia, Ukraine, South Africa, Japan, and Hungary. For more than 20 years, he was involved in research funding projects on the national and international level - as participant, partner, coordinator, and even evaluator for the European Commission.
For more than the last ten years, he was one of the still rare breed of "EU Liaison Officers" (Advisors) of the Max Planck Society - which involved lectures, expert advice, and pre-evaluations for project proposals. In his role as EU-Evaluator (including in 2013), he was involved in the Marie Curie, Cooperative Projects, and International Cooperation Programs of the European Commission. In the latter, he covered the Arab Peninsula and spent a brief period in the Emirates.
Currently, his focus is on assisting (mostly German) colleagues with their European project applications. This he does in the form of lectures and information afternoons at universities and clinics, by personal assistance with Framework Program and ERC applications, by doing "pre-evaluations" as well as by assistance with project management.
